Storm-Proofing Your Refrigerator: Practical Tips for Homeowners

When it comes to storms, we Texans know a thing or two about battening down the hatches. But did you ever stop to think about how to storm-proof your refrigerator? It might sound a little funny, but keeping your food safe during a storm is no joke.

Here are some practical (and fun!) tips to help you keep your cool when the weather gets wild.

1. Stock Up on Essentials

First things first, make sure your fridge is stocked with the essentials. And by essentials, I mean things like water, non-perishable snacks, and ice packs. Ice packs are your best friend during a power outage. They help keep your fridge cool even when the power’s out. And hey, throw in some BBQ leftovers for good measure. After all, what’s more Texan than BBQ?

2. Freeze Containers of Water

Here’s a neat trick: freeze containers of water to help keep your fridge and freezer cold longer. Not only do these ice blocks help maintain the temperature, but when they melt, you’ve got yourself some extra drinking water. That’s a win-win in my book. Plus, it’s a good excuse to buy some more of those Texas-shaped ice cube trays you’ve been eyeing.

3. Keep the Doors Closed

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s crucial: keep those fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Every time you open the door, cold air escapes, and warm air sneaks in. So resist the urge to check on that leftover brisket every five minutes. Your future self will thank you.

4. Group Your Food

Organize your food so that you can quickly grab what you need without rummaging through everything. Keep like items together – all the dairy in one spot, meats in another, and so on. This way, you can find what you’re looking for quickly and keep the doors closed. Bonus points if you do this in a cowboy hat.

5. Consider a Backup Power Source

If you’re serious about storm-proofing, think about investing in a backup power source. A generator can keep your fridge running during extended power outages. Just make sure to use it safely and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. And while you’re at it, why not power up some fans and enjoy a backyard BBQ while the neighborhood’s dark? Now that’s some Texas ingenuity.

6. Use a Thermometer

Keep a thermometer in your fridge and freezer to monitor the temperature. If the power goes out, you’ll be able to tell if your food is still safe to eat. The magic numbers to remember are 40°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer. If your food gets warmer than these temps, it’s time to toss it.

7. Prep a Cooler

Have a cooler (or two) ready to go with ice packs and non-perishable snacks. If the power’s out for a while, you can transfer some of your fridge items to the cooler. This helps keep everything at a safe temperature and gives you easy access to your favorite storm snacks. And who doesn’t love an excuse to break out the cooler?

Extra Tips and Fun Facts
